Wooly Bezel Brooch or AmuletStudents will needlefelt a base and bezel of wool for a glass jewel, then personalize their piece with bead embroidery and assorted sequins. This uniquely sculptural technique of needlefelting creates dimension and definition, and along with a beautiful brooch students will take home tools and skills that will advance their own designs.

Technique Learned: Felting, Bead Embroidery

Kit Includes:

  • custom made felting tools
  • wool to complete project
  • glass cabochon
  • glass beads and sequins
  • pin findings
  • printed tutorial

Supply list for students to bring:

  • bead dish
  • bead mat/work surface
  • #12 beading needles
  • scissors
  • large sponge for felting surface
  • thread: any is okay; I use nylon thread but fireline is fine if that’s what you’ve got.
  • task lamp with extension cord if needed

The instructor will have samples of colored thread to try in class, and will have her favorite felt-trimming scissors and additional felting tools for sale.

About Kim Van Antwerp:

Kim Van AntwerpWith a BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin, Kim started out drawing and painting. She has added fibers, metalsmithing, lampworking and beadweaving to her portfolio and loves bringing multiple skills and materials together in her projects.

Travel, history, art and music are among her interests, and when it snows you will invariably find her snowboarding on the slopes of Lake Tahoe.

 

About Dustin Wedekind:

Dustin WedekindDustin has a BFA in Fibers from Colorado State University. He began his beading career as Bead Boy, writing for Beadwork magazine, which grew into a senior editor position. Drawing upon years of technical editing, designing, and illustrating with Interweave Press, he wrote Getting Started with Seed Beads, published in 2012.
